Personality:
"I got aroused last night watching a nature documentary about bees."
Charles Boyle is anomalous, or so he would say. It's a fancy word and fits him perfectly. Eccentric and often deviating from the norm when it comes to personal and professional relationships, views on popular culture, books, movies, religion, and more, Charles definitely steps to the beat of his own drum. He's weird and there's an innately confident quality to how he views himself. He k n o w s that he's different from other people but it doesn't bother him. Charles is who he is and he's not ashamed of that fact.
"Sexy train is leaving the station."
Boyle looks on the bright side of things. Whether it's a hard case or the threat of losing his job, Charles tries to keep everyone's spirits high and is unapologetic in his optimistic approach. While he is generally mild-mannered in temperament, there are times when his anxiety gets the better of him and his behavior becomes erratic and his voice becomes unnecessarily high-pitched. This is a sign that he's stressed or out of his comfort zone, usually a combination of both. Charles is a highly emotional man and isn't afraid to show that part of himself to other people. Even complete strangers, unfortunately. He openly loves, expresses tenderness and compassion, and is a violent supporter of food. Fine wines, cheeses, bread, aged deer meat. Name it, he'll try it.
"My hunch, my hunch. My lovely case-y hunch. Come on, Jake. Sing with me!"
While brave to a fault, jumping in without any care to his own well-being, Charles is a highly critical person. He'll argue to have the last word if he believes he's right. In situations where, especially with books and movies, Charles will dramatically disagree with anybody's opinions if they don't line up with his own. There's been times when he's the reason a crook isn't caught and it was all because the angle of his camera wasn't right or he spent too much time picking a route to take on the GPS. He nitpicks and pushes at people's buttons when he thinks they're wrong, but will apologize if he's proven to be incorrect. Charles shows humility in the end but it's a long road to get him there.
"I just discovered a new drug, too. It's called your relationship and I'm high on it."
Charles is loyal. Completely, relentlessly, foolishly loyal. His number one person, best friend, bone bro, amigo, and fellow detective is Jake Peralta. Without any doubt, Charles Boyle would die if it meant Jake lived. He'd give him his major organs, jump in front of a bullet, and any other in the moment dramatic action that he could take. Charles borders on obsessive and overly involved when it comes to Jake's life; relationships and career aspirations. He actively assists and is always right there whether Jake wants him to be or not. He might be ridiculous but he means well. He's a good friend and co-worker, always there for the people around him, and he strives to be the best possible father to his adopted son Nikolaj.
He's a weirdo, knows that, but is a good man and a mighty fine detective. Terry said that last part so it must be true.

Abilities:
- Regular dude
- Hard working detective
- Food lover and critic
- Bubbleweight champion
Flaws:
Charles is not a perfect person. Far from it. If asked anybody around not a single one would say he's anywhere near that. A good dude and friend. A loving father. But has his negative traits and flaws the same as anyone else. He's critical. Way too critical. He applies that to himself, his co-workers, criminals, religion, etc. Everything has weak spots and he's always the first to notice. He's a jealous man. The idea of someone replacing him as Jake's best friend incites in him an obsessive and passionate wave of jealousy. He hates the way he acts when he feels that way but he can't do anything to stop it. He's dramatic, eccentric, clingy, needy, and far too involved in the personal lives of others.

The Latvian foodie scene was a few years behind Brooklyn in style but the recipes were classic. Hundreds of years old and required a level of finesse that only the finest natural chef could successfully duplicate. Charles was one of those esteemed individuals. While his tastes might lean towards other cuisines, though he has no true favorite, Charles has a duty to his son Nikolaj to obtain the necessary skills in that area of cooking. The more he knows, the easier it'll be to teach his son, and when he grows up he'll have that connection to his heritage. After everything Nikolaj had been through, this was the least Charles could do for him.
There was only one problem. No internet. No cookbooks. A shameful food supply. And he couldn't remember the recipes for Latvian Kartupelu Pancakes. The ingredients were potatoes, milk, egg, onions, wheat flour, salt, and black pepper to taste.
Step One: Wash the potatoes, peel and grate them all. Put potatoes in a bowl. StepTwo: Bring milk to a boil and pour it into the bowl with the potatoes. Step Three: Add the eggs and mix well with chopped potatoes mixture. Step Four: Now place the chopped onion into the owl and mix well. Add seasoning. Step Five: .. Add. No, wait. Mix. He was out of breath from running from whatever that weird four eyed creature was but he had to remember. Nikolaj depended on him! Step Five: Use the flour to make the mixture a bit thick. Kick the monster. Yell for Jake. Step Six: Prepare the mixture into pancakes of 10-12 centimeters in diameter and fry. That's it. That's the recipe. Boyle stops to catch his breath and repeats the recipe in increasingly higher decimals.
Jake catches up to him and in hopes of cheering him up, he pauses in his fifth repeat of the Latvian Kartupelu Pancakes to say, "My Nana always said, bad news first because the good news is probably a lie. Fun fact: she made me cry a lot." There, that should be good enough. He smiles at his best friend and nods. The shrill squeals fo the weird beast on their tale echoes off the stone walls around him and Charles puts aside recalling the recipe so that he can get Jake to safety. Then himself.
Jake comes first, obviously, but Jake is already running and Charles takes off after him, thinking to himself that Jake Peralta's the best cop in the precinct, no doubt about it. They might be in some weird place but that didn't change that fact. Oh, and he remembered the recipe. All of it.
